Guest Post: Creating a Character: Cameron Shearer

Hello, readers!
My name is Skye McNeil, and I write romantic suspense and contemporary romance. Shout out to Nadja for allowing me to post a guest blog today. One of the questions I get often as a writer is “Where do you get the ideas for your characters?”. Honestly, I don’t know half the time. Sometimes, they come when I least suspect them such as while dreaming or taking a shower. Believe me, it’s difficult to jot down notes during either of those events. I keep a journal on my bedside table to write short characteristics or plot ideas in the middle of the night. It’s everyday life that gives me the best characters. For example, I work at a law firm and I like to write about what I know. Another example? I loosely based my main character, Cameron Shearer, off a neighbor I knew in Ohio. I have no idea where this guy is now or anything about him other than he was a rebellious smartass, so I wanted to create a world where I could explore the possibilities of his life. I have a thing for bad boys and so I made Cameron a mobster trying to reform his ways. Tattoos are also one of my weaknesses and Cameron has a toned body full of them. And what’s a bad boy without a bit of mystery? Cameron’s backstory is constantly evolving in my head. It’s changed numerous times throughout books one and two. I’ve plotted book three, and I’m excited to see where Cameron’s story leads me. I want to create characters (especially men) who you fall in love with because I sure as hell do. Forming characters is both difficult and delightful. They need normal flaws, but also something to make the reader wish they’d materialize from the pages. My imagination is always at work especially since I get the chance to see drama play out in both civil and criminal courts with my day job. Coming up with characters is one of my favorite parts of writing. Whether it’s researching mobsters or criminal law, Cameron Shearer is a character you don’t want to miss.

Who knew being surrounded by three hot guys could be so deliciously exhausting?

As the mystery of the case unravels, she soon discovers the true reason behind Cameron’s impromptu visit to Iowa. It’s this knowledge that endangers all those she holds dear. Caught up in confusion, chaos, and criminal law, how will her heart survive the final verdict?
